Jennifer Ann Crecente

September 9, 1987 - February 15, 2006

Case Summary

Jennifer Crecente, an only child, was a senior high school honors student in Austin when she was shot and murdered on February 15, 2006, by her ex-boyfriend, Justin Crabbe. Jennifer's body was found on the night of February 16 in a wooded area. Crabbe was arrested on February 18, 2006, on a charge of first-degree murder. Crabbe told police that he and another man were playing with a gun. Jennifer was about 20 to 30 feet away. The gun fired, and Jennifer fell to the ground. Crabbe did not check on Jennifer to see how badly she was injured before fleeing the scene. A videotape showed Crabbe was with another man purchasing ammunition at a sporting goods store. Crabbe was on parole from a prior felony conviction and could not legally purchase ammunition himself. On August 1, 2007, Crabbe pled guilty to Jennifer's murder as part of a plea agreement and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Crabbe is now eligible for his first parole review.

Jennifer was active in her community as a camp counselor and a hospital volunteer. She also was considering majoring in psychology after her high school graduation. Crabbe's horrific actions destroyed Jennifer's community gifts and her future aspirations.

In response to Jennifer's murder her family formed two charitable organizations, a memorial grant created in her name, and legislation passed in Texas to prevent "Teen Dating Violence" and "Jennifer's Law" allowing the family of any Texas student who died during their senior year of high school to request a posthumous diploma.
